According to the Center for Health and Statistics only 9% of American adults consume enough healthy foods to reach their RDI of nutrients. Researchers at John Hopkins found that sub-optimal nutrient intake is a wide spread problem in America. Such nutrients include but are not limited to: vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, magnesium, copper, selenium, zinc, and the Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's).
Although the best way to obtain vitamins and nutrients is through dietary intake, we know for the majority of Americans this is not occurring. When we are not able to obtain nutrients from food then we need to supplement with vitamins. Vitamins that mimic nature as closely as possible is the best way for nutrients to be absorbed. You need to be careful when choosing a brand of vitamin. Here's why: Vitamins need to be in a form that is bio-available. Bio-availability is a gauge of how much a particular substance can be absorbed by our body. Those vitamins that are formulated with poor bio-availability means the nutrients will simply pass through our system un-absorbed, with no health benefit. Not all forms of vitamins and minerals are alike and some are better absorbed than others. There is a wide difference between cheaper synthetic vitamins and vitamins with more expensive ingredients. The formulation needs to be in the right balance, not just hastily formulated, or many ingredients can cancel each other out, or even cause harmful consequences.
Look for nutritional supplements that follow pharmaceutical good manufacturing compliance (GMC). This is the highest standard possible for nutritional supplements. Another thing to look for is a statement stating purity guaranteed. This means that the ingredients have been verified with a certificate of analysis to confirm potency.
